Addiction is an adaptation. It’s not you, it’s the cage you live in.
Man uses substances to treat pain, and illness, and restore health. It is called that in ancient Egypt, physicians prescribed figs, dates, and castor oil as a laxative and used tannic acid to treat burns.
The early Chinese pharmacies included opium, known for its pain-relieving qualities, while the Hindus used the cannabis and henbane plants as anesthesia. Drug abuse means taking more than the recommended dose of prescribed drugs.
The drugs comprise marijuana, opium, cocaine, heroin, or other illegal substances. Drug abuse and abuse of other substances take to physical and psychological dependence. It causes serious problems a few of which are discussed here.
Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self-esteem.
It can adopt any of the forms like tolerance, habituation, and addiction. Tolerance happens when the body is accustomed to a drug and requires its ever-increasing amount to attain the same pharmacological effects.
The condition gets worsened when such drugs are used at high doses for long periods of time. Its stop can cause nausea, headache, restlessness, sweating, and sleeplessness. Habituation is the continuous desire for a drug.
A drug often produces an elated emotional state. Addiction is a severe craving for a substance. When the habit adopts its climax, it is called addiction. Addiction decreases a person’s ability to function normally.
The drug addict is ill mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and physically. He can not live without drugs. It may make him mad or he may die if the drug is not provided to him. Drug addicts are a continuous source of pain and torment for their families.
They often need money to pay for the drugs. Thus they are an oppressing responsibility and onus on the financial budget of their families. They create serious and gruesome circumstances for their family. They are also a source of humility and dishonor for them.
The use of the drug for non-medical purposes occurs throughout society. Heroin addiction is the most threatening problem because it may lead its victims to criminal behavior to pay for the drug. Heroin addicts are the sores of society.
Drug addicts also cause definite economic problems for a country. As drug addicts are good for nothing. They are a parasite to society. These people cannot do any agreeable or valuable thing for the benefit of the country.
On an international level, drug addicts mar the name and fame of the country. The awareness of the destruction of drug addiction is on its zenith nowadays. Unluckily, our country is in the zone where poppies are grown and cultivated on a large scale.
Some steps can be taken to check the production of drugs. Worldwide co-operation for the total extermination of drugs is demanded. Internationally recognized law should be enforced strictly. The people involved in the production and supply of drugs should severely be punished.
Developing countries like Afghanistan should be helped specifically for the end of the growth of poppies. The people who grow and cultivate these crops should be given some proper substitutes to earn their livelihood.
The people should also be made conscious of the dire consequences of the use of these drugs. Health centers for the treatment of addicts should instantly be set up. These measures if adopted may give better results.
Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient
