Life in a Big City Essay
A city is an extensively built-up area where a large number of people reside and work. The physical features of a city are utterly different from those of a village. In cities, we find beautiful buildings, smooth roads, public parks, luxuriously elegant shopping plazas, big bazaars, and government offices.
Liveliness, thrill, and excitement are the real charms of city life. In cities, people remain busy from dawn to dusk. Numerous public places like parks, theatres, cinema houses, and bazaars remain teeming with people till late at night.
The real appeal of city life is the availability of all sorts of amenities, facilities, and services. Schools, colleges, and other academic institutions offer ample opportunities for comprehensive education. Hospitals and private clinics are there to treat dangerous diseases.
Cinema houses, theatres, and public parks provide every kind of entertainment, fun, and recreation. Government offices serve people, courts dispense easy and prompt justice; big markets and shopping plazas supply all kinds of provisions.
Fast transportation is easily available everywhere. The vast streets, broad motorways, and metalled highways make a journey smooth and pleasurable. Large vehicles, big buses, trains, and airplanes make travel fast and comfortable.
All kinds of eatables are easily available all year round. There are decorated provision stores, huge hotels, canteens, restaurants, and utility stores to fulfill the needs of the people. Sanitary conditions in the cities are really amazing.
Dirty water flows in sealed pipes to sewage treatment plants. Contaminated material is disposed of safely and carefully. The paved and smooth streets and roads are kept neat and clean. Pure drinking water is easily accessible round the clock.
Education is a significant part of human evolution and elevation. Without learning, man is a little better than animals. It is education that transmits skills and enhances efficiencies. It imparts good moral values, refines characters, and makes people cultured.
Cities are the places that provide maximum chances for education. Numerous schools, colleges, and universities work in cities and educate people. The cities are bounteous in offering abundant opportunities for the progress of all sorts.
People can find prospects for the uplift of their respective businesses or whatsoever. From a specialist to a layman, all can find opportunities for substantial advance. Manufacturing firms produce a vast range of products.
Though the advantages of city life are miscellaneous and diverse, there are certain detriments of this life. In cities, life is quick, hazardous, and precarious. The evils like theft, terrorism, sectarianism, massacre and kidnapping are in vogue in cities. Somerset Maugham, a British writer says
In the country, the darkness of night is friendly and familiar, but in a city, with its blaze of lights, it is unnatural, hostile, and menacing. It is like a monstrous vulture that hovers, biding its time.
In cities, people are egocentric and self-seeking. They do not bother about what is happening around them. Their sphere of activities is strictly limited to their interest. People are busy earning and spending. They have become materialistic and money-oriented. Wordsworth recites
The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours
The people residing in cities cannot get pure and fresh food. They can not get pure milk, butter, curd, fresh vegetables, and fruit. They inhale the polluted and smoky air. They live in a polluted atmosphere and unhygienic conditions. These living conditions affect their health adversely.
Some suitable steps can make city life worth living. First of all, steps should be taken to provide people with pure water and fresh air. Fresh food supplies should be ensured and regulated. Vehicles that emit smoke should be banned to ensure a clean smokeless atmosphere. Walt Whitman says
A great city is that which has the greatest men and women
