Essay Co – Education for Intermediate Students

Co-education is a system of education in which students of both the sexes receive education in the same classrooms, school, college, faculty, or university. The present lifestyle has become highly complex. So education must always show the changing behaviors of the age.

It must reflect the progress of the human experience. Now the role of both men and women has extended in life. Now it depends on society to provide them with a proper structure of education. In ancient times, people had their education within the four walls of their families.
As civilizations became more difficult, education became more formal, important, and comprehensive. Chinese and Greek societies focussed intensely on the education of males.

Plato was probably the first who preached that women should enjoy the same educational opportunities as men. On the other hand, Aristotle supported liberal education for men only.

In ancient Rome, education was extended to the women of noble families. But they were taught in separate schools. The custom of single-sex schools prevailed through the Reformation Period.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, co-education became a principle of education. In British, Germany, and the Soviet Union, the education of boys and girls in the same classes became an accepted practice in the early 20th century.
The idea of coeducation in our country has become considerably controversial. It has triggered fierce debates and heated discussion. The supporters of this system of education heap up substantial arguments in favor of it.
While another group of people considers it a lethal weapon against our golden Islamic and social traditions. A strong argument given in favor of this system is that our country is a developing country.

The economy of our country through steadily flourishing is still fragile. Our resources are not substantial enough to stomach the expenses of separate educational institutions for boys and girls, particularly at a high level.

Therefore, we should adopt coeducation at least at a high level of study. It would help us to decrease our educational expenses. Second, this system supports tough competition in studies between boys and girls.

It arouses a passion for work in them. They make enormous efforts to win laurels. Their academic achievements prove to be exemplary. The girls endeavor to beat the boys and vise versa.

It is due to this fierce competition that the students show unparalleled skills in learning. They sweat blood to show better results. Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a U.S. writer says: Competition is a performance stimulant

Third, coeducation promotes character-building activities among students. It promotes them to have a strong character in life. They become sensible and sagacious. They learn how to overcome their sexual emotions and sex drive.
Moreover, it makes the uncouth boys modest and cultured. They learn to give respect to girls and to treat them with a polite but rather distant bravery. On the other hand, the girls develop a kind of confidence and balance.

They become less weak, timid, and bashful. Another persuasive argument presented in favor of coeducation is that in the present era, no society can afford to confine their women within the walls of the house.

When women have to participate in social set up, why should they not be prepared for that earlier? Anna Dostoyevsky, a Russian district and writer says:

From a timid, shy girl I had become a woman of resolute character, who could no longer be frightened by the struggle with troubles

On the other side, there are those who are against and oppose this system of education. They opine that the supporters of this system are given to self-deception.

If we see the social system of those countries where coeducation is rampant, we come to know that such golden customs and traditions of honor and nobility no more exist.

The main and important purpose of education is to prepare young people for life. Man and woman are thought to be two wheels of the vehicle of life. No doubt, they should move forward at the same speed and in the same direction.

Therefore, both should be trained and educated equally. In fact, coeducation is a western concept in its nature and application. Its main objective is to end the sanctity and modesty of women by convincing them to join the glimmer of the club.

So the education that deprives them of their honor should be checked with an iron hand. Most importantly, our religion Islam does not allow the free mixing of boys and girls.

To sum up, coeducation is not good for any society and particularly for an Islamic society. Therefore, separate institutions should be set up for both the sexes.
